Who Has a Copy of Your House Key?

Unless you are the original resident of your new home, chances are that you have at times been concerned about who might be able to access your home. Your concerns are not for naught, if you’ve wondered how many key copies exist to the previous home occupants. The truth is that it is really impossible to know who might be able to access your home with a spare key to your house. It is therefore really important that you take the steps that are necessary towards securing your home.

When moving into a previously lived in home, you have a couple of options to choose from when deciding on how to deal with your door locks. You can either choose to replace the lock completely, or you can have a certified locksmith rekey your door locks for you. Replacing locks can get very expensive considering that many houses have several doors with a number of door locks. Re-keying a lock costs just a small percentage of the cost with an assist from a professional, or even on your own.

Save Yourself Money by Rekeying Your Locks

  • To attempt a lock re-key, you will have to buy all the supplies that you need through online suppliers or at your local Home Depot, Lowes or other hardware stores in your area.
  • It is important to purchase the exact kit that you need in order to match the style and brand of locks that are installed in your house or apartment.
  • Before leaving to the store, we recommend taking a picture of your door lock from both sides. This way, you have a point of reference in case you need assistance in choosing the exact kit you require.
  • It can also be useful to keep the current keys that you have on hand, as you will need them in order to take out the cylinder from within your door’s lock.

Once you have the tools and kit that you need, you can get started.
